NZOAD July 2025 Updates + Industry News

Below is a brief update from NZOAD, along with some key developments from across the industry:

Update on New Rulings for Amusement Devices

NZOAD remains in ongoing contact with MBIE and WorkSafe regarding recent classification changes. Many members have been informed that their go-karts are no longer classified as amusement devices. However, MBIE has recommended that operators continue to have their equipment regularly inspected by mechanical engineers—regardless of registration status.

Despite the uncertainty, bumper cars and dodgems appear to remain classified as amusement devices. Meanwhile, members operating equipment with belay systems have been notified that these devices have been removed from the register.

MBIE has yet to formally clarify its position, which prevents NZOAD from issuing a definitive statement. Many members have expressed concern that the reclassification could lower safety standards across the industry, potentially introducing equipment and practices that may compromise patron and public safety. Should incidents occur, this could also damage public perception and trust in the industry.

It’s important to note that even with the declassification of go-karts, operators are still legally bound by the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA), which remains the minimum compliance requirement.
